Originally smoky quartz was thought to be a kind of topaz. When scientists began developing and implementing new technologies, they were able to examine the stone’s molecular components at a basic level. They discovered (or redefined) it was a type of quartz. These days, the name is often interchangeable. A quote that I find aptly explains this ongoing, heated discussion:
“A rose by any other name would smell as sweet”
To be summed up briefly, any name you give smoky topaz/quartz, it’s still the same exact stone. It’s still that beautiful, smoky colored gemstone we know and love. It’s still going to sit the same on your finger or around your neck.
